چکیده

The lack of noise reduction methods resistant to waveform distortion can hamper correct and accurate decomposition in the processing of full-waveform LiDAR data. This paper evaluates a time-domain method for smoothing and reducing the noise level in such data. The Savitzky-Golay (S-G) approach approximates and smooths data by taking advantage of fitting a polynomial of degree d, using local least-squares. As a consequence of the integration of this method with the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) approach, and applying this filter on the singular vectors of the SVD, satisfactory denoising results can be obtained. The results of this SVD-based S-G approach have been evaluated using two different LiDAR datasets and also compared with those of other popular methods in terms of the degree of preservation of the moments of the signal and closeness to the noisy signal. The results indicate that the SVD-based S-G approach has superior performance in denoising full-waveform LiDAR data. * Corresponding author.

Analysis of Full-waveform Lidar Data for Classification of Urban Areas

In contrast to conventional airborne multi-echo laser scanner systems, full-waveform (FW) lidar systems are able to record the entire emitted and backscattered signal of each laser pulse. Instead of clouds of individual 3D points, FW devices provide connected 1D profiles of the 3D scene, which contain more detailed and additional information about the structure of the illuminated surfaces. This...

Classifying Compressed Lidar Waveform Data

Full waveform recording is becoming increasingly affordable and, consequently, available in today's state-of-the-art LiDAR systems. Therefore, there is no practical limitation to the complexity of pulse detection and other methods that can be applied in post-processing mode. Analyzing the entire return signal, the full waveform can provide additional geometrical and physical information about t...

A Sparsity-Based Regularization Approach for Deconvolution of Full-Waveform Airborne Lidar Data

Full-waveform lidar systems capture the complete backscattered signal from the interaction of the laser beam with targets located within the laser footprint. The resulting data have advantages over discrete return lidar, including higher accuracy of the range measurements and the possibility of retrieving additional returns from weak and overlapping pulses. In addition, radiometric characterist...

Processing Full-waveform Lidar Data to Extract Forest Parameters and Digital Terrain Model: Validation in an Alpine Coniferous Forest

Small footprint discrete return lidar data have already proved useful for providing information on forest areas. During the last decade, a new generation of airborne laser scanners, called full-waveform (FW) lidar systems, has emerged. They digitize and record the entire backscattered signal of each emitted pulse. Fullwaveform data hold large potentialities. In this study, we investigated the p...
